Week 8 & 9: Down in the River & A Living Prayer

Last week got away from us and you might have realized we didn’t get our blog posted so this week you’re getting 2 in 1! So here we go!

First up is Down in the River. It is variously described as a Christian folk hymn, an African-American spiritual, an Appalachian song, and a gospel song. Some believe it may have been composed by an African-American slave but the exact origin is unknown. It definitely has the flavor unique to early America.

We love the instrumentation, Jeff Polen, put together for our rendition of Down in the River. Really upbeat, with a country feel, makes it super fun to sing and seems to always be a crowd fave.

Down in the River

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way!

O sisters, let's go down,
Let's go down, come on down
O sisters, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way!

O brothers, let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
Come on, brothers, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way!

O sinners, let's go down
Let's go down, come on down
O sinners, let's go down
Down in the river to pray

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way!

Doing this blog made us realize there are songs that we recorded for our albums that we haven’t done a lot in our programs. A Living Prayer, written by Ron Block, is one of those. The lyrics have a powerful message of letting go and allowing God to work in and through our lives.

Over the past year, we focused on certain songs, trying to memorize and get comfortable with them. and in doing so, A Living Prayer, along with others, unintentionally got left behind. We look forward to working on and adding ‘new’ songs to our programs in the near future.

A Living Prayer

In this world I walk alone
With no place to call my home
But there is one who holds my hand
The rugged road through barren lands
The way is dark the road is steep
But He's become my eyes to see
The strength to climb my griefs to bear
The Savior lives inside me there

In Your love I find release
A haven from my unbelief
Take my life and let me be
A living prayer my God to Thee

In these trials of life I find
Another voice inside my mind
He comforts me and bids me live
Inside the love the Father gives

In Your love I find release
A haven from my unbelief
Take my life and let me be
A living prayer my God to Thee

Take my life and let me be
A living prayer my God to Thee
